Steubenville, Ohio - The Franciscan Women's Golf team opened their season with a home dual match against Geneva on Labor Day afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes defeated the Lady Barons 364-432.
How it Happened
The Lady Barons were led by sophomore
Gia Hooper who carded a 90 in her season opening round. The reigning First-Team All-PAC player scored 45 on each nine. The lead group finished the last two holes in near pitch black conditions, as pictured below putting on #2 green at Steubenville Country Club.
Freshman
Katheryn Brehm shot a 104 in her collegiate round. Brehm started the round of strong and battled hard through a tough stretch on the back nine to finish with the second best score for Franciscan. Fellow freshman,
Grace Vyvlecka, scored a 116 in her first collegiate match, and
Madeline Dorobiala shot a 122.
Medalist honors were shared by two players from Geneva that carded an 89, Sabiena Winston and Sarah Theus. Also playing for the Lady Barons were
Emily Lamontagne (147) and
Rosemary Prezzia (144). Five Geneva players would shoot sub-100 to give the Golden Tornadoes the 68 shot victory.

Franciscan will continue to practice a prepare for their first road tournament of the year, as they travel to Thiel next Friday. This will be the first time the Lady Barons travel to Greenville, Pa. and play at Avalon at Buhl Golf Course. Many PAC schools are registered to play, so it will be a good early test to see where the Lady Barons rack up amongst their conference rivals.
