Championship Dreams Goes to Final Match

Franciscan 4, Allegheny 5

The Barons traveled to conference newcomer Allegheny for their first PAC championship as the underdog. Preseason favorites Allegheny and Franciscan proved everyone correct that they were the teams to beat this year. In the regular season Allegheny came to Franciscan and beat the Barons 6-3. A handful of those matches were extremely close and the match could have gone either direction. This time the Barons traveled to Allegheny and brought their A game. Completing back-to-back undefeated conference play season Maria Herrera and Olivia Colby lead the day with a #1 doubles win. After doubles play was finished the team score was Barons 2-1.
Maria Herrera defeated her opponent in the #1 spot and Claire Cardie won her match in the #4 spot to bring the Barons 1 point away from claiming their 3rd PAC title in a row. Allegheny edged out the next few singles matches, then it all came down to the #2 Singles match. Tied at 4-4 and the #2's grinding out every game, standout freshmen Kina Ehlers had the biggest stage of the season. The first set went to a tiebreak which went to Allegheny 7-4. In the second set Kina had to overcome muscle cramps to gut out every volley. Regardless of the score she continued to fight for every point. Her opponent is a All-NCAC honorable mention undefeated this season senior. In their first meeting in the regular season, Kina was only able to grab one game off Swan. In last night's Championship match we saw how hard Kina fought to bring the title home for her team. Grabbing 6 games to force a tiebreak and another 2 games in the second set was an impressive performance to finish the season on.
