Strong Singles Play Lifts Barons over Wolverines

Franciscan 5, Grove City 4

STEUBENVILLE - The Franciscan Women's Tennis team picked up a big PAC win against Grove City on Saturday to clinch the #2 seed, as they just have one regular season matchup before postseason play begins next week.

Doubles
First off the court were the top doubles pair of Maria Herrera and Olivia Colby. Their 8-1 win kept them unbeaten in conference doubles matches at 7-0 with all of those being at #1 doubles. The Wolverines would fair much better in the other two matchups, as they would win #2 and #3 doubles. That would give them a 2-1 lead, as we headed to singles play.

Singles
The Barons would dig deep and put together a strong effort in singles play to pull out the victory. Franciscan was led by Maria Herrera, who improved to 7-0 in PAC singles with a straight sets win at #1 singles. Claire Cardie was the next to finish, as she would give the Barons a 3-2 lead with a straight sets win at #4 singles. Estelle Leon added to lead with a 6-4, 6-0 win at #6 singles. Kina Ehlers grabbed the game winning point at #2 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 to give Franciscan the team win. Olivia Colby and Haley Davinsizer each fell in tough fought matches at ## and #5 singles.

Next Up
Franciscan will finish PAC play on Sunday, as Waynesburg comes to Steubenville. This match was originally schedule to be at Waynesburg, but it was rained out and moved to this date. With the win against Grove City, Franciscan has clinched the #2 seed in the PAC Championship Tournament which means they will get a bye into the semifinals. The Barons will host the winner of the #3 vs. #6 quarterfinal match at Belleview Courts on Thursday October 13th in the PAC semifinals. Time still to be determined. The Barons will still look to finish the regular season out strong against the Yellow Jackets, who they hold a 2-0 record against all-time.
