How It HappenedÂ
The Barons traveled to Grove City, Pa. to face, another undefeated PAC team, the Wolverines. The game was extremely tight. Neither team lead by more than two points at any time, and there were five lead changes. Coming off back-to-back career nights Joanna Hilkert started the scoring off for the Barons midway through the 1st quarter. Shortly after, her teammate Riley O'Brien scored another goal tying the game at 2. Mary Bohli scored the final Baron goal for the quarter, and heading into the 2nd quarter the Barons were trailing 3-4.
Shortly into the 2nd quarter the Wolverines extended their lead to 2 points. Elizabeth Dudas won an important draw control allowing the Barons to be on the attack and chop away at the lead. Dudas then took a pass from Katheryn Brehm scoring her first goal of the game. Grace Deegan won the ensuing draw control and pushed it up to Theresa Lyle. Lyle quickly found Annie King, and King sunk the shot tying the game at 5. Later in the quarter, goals from Grace Deegan and Annie King extended the Barons lead to 2. Christina Haug scored a solo goal before the break, but the Wolverines had a few answers of their own. The pair of quick Wolverine goals in the waning minutes brought the game to a tie heading into halftime.
In the 3rd quarter Annie King scored 3 goals to help keep the Barons in the game. Carolyn Cooke and Joanna Hilkert helped her by each adding a goal. In the end of the 3rd quarter the game was still tied, 13-13.Â
Scoring came to a halt in the 4th quarter. Annie King added her 6th goal of the game giving the Barons a 1 point lead with 10 minutes remaining. Rose Kane stood tall in goal for the 4th quarter. She saw 6 shots in the bottom half of the quarter making one save. Kane did a phenomenal job preventing the Wolverines from tying or getting the lead. With three minutes to go, Wolverines' Stoltzfus managed to score with the shot clock winding down. This tied the game at 14. The Barons called a timeout to plan out their strategy. Thanks to a draw control from Grace Deegan, the Barons had the pleasure of being on the attack in the final moments rather than defense. Annie King and Joanna Hilkert each got shots off. King's went high, but Hilkert forced the Wolverine goalie to make a save. Wolverines went on the attack, but before they could put anything together they drew a yellow card. The Barons had 40 seconds with a man up advantage. The Wolverines held on a man down, and the game headed to overtime.Â
In overtime, the Barons had 3 costly turnovers. The last one leading to the game ending goal three minutes into the extra period.
