Leon and Cardie Win in Straight Sets In Bearcats Sweep

Franciscan 9, Saint Vincent 0

STEUBENVILLE, OHIO - The Franciscan Women's Tennis Team began PAC conference play on Friday afternoon at home against Saint Vincent

Doubles
In Doubles play, the standard #1 Doubles of Maria Herrera and Olivia Colby beat their opponents 8-4. In prior matches coach Greve split his freshmen up in doubles. Today he moved Estelle Leon up to the #2 Doubles team with Haley Davinsizer. The #2 pair were the first to finish their match in a quick 8-3 roll. The sensational freshmen Kina Ehlers and Claire Cardie paired up at the #3 Doubles spot. The freshmen took their time, but were clinical in their play and took down their opponents 8-1. Having the freshmen play together at the #3 is foreshadowing what opponents have to look forward to for the next 4 years. Going into Singles play the Barons were winning 3-0 in team points.

Singles
Estelle Leon was the first to finish her Singles match in a quick straight sets match. Estelle took a year off of tennis and she appears to be getting back into form. Estelle is an athletic player who wills herself to win. That's a strong asset to have to round out your Singles roster. Freshmen Margaret Vernau was second to finish and picked up the 5th team point clinching the team win. Margaret only dropped one game in her two sets. Claire Cardie had a stellar of a day yesterday. Only dropping one game in Doubles play, then turning around and sweeping her opponent in straight sets in Singles play for a grand total of 3 sets and only 1 lost game.
The Barons were undefeated in Conference play last year. Maria Herrera looks primed to defend her Player of the Year title, and the freshmen additions have the Barons on track to complete the three-peat PAC title accomplishment.

Next Up
Franciscan will have very little time off, as they travel to Baldwin Wallace for 1:00 p.m. start time on Saturday. This will be the Yellow Jackets first match of the 2022-23 season. Franciscan is 2-1 all-time against Baldwin Wallace, including a 7-2 win last season. The Barons swept doubles play, but then fell in #1 and #2 singles in the victory. One of those Yellow Jackets that earned a win is still on the roster, so it should be another tough test for the Barons, as they look to steadily improve this season.
