How It Happened
Franciscan made the trip up north to Meadville, Pennsylvania to take on the Allegheny Gators on Saturday afternoon. The Barons would have one of their best players back, as Madison Doan returned after missing the last six games due to injury. That energized the Barons in the early going, but the Gators would respond with a large third quarter and close out the victory.
The Barons would get their first four points of the day from Doan, who was not showing any rust in the early going. Melnyk and LaRose would connect on three pointers this quarter as well to keep Franciscan in the lead. Kylie Panizza added a tough and one as well to give Franciscan a 16-15 edge heading into the second quarter. Ilena Gonzales kept the Franciscan momentum going, as she made the opening bucket in the new quarter to stretch the lead up to three. Giuliana Biasutto made a pair of buckets as well, but the Gators ended the quarter on an 8-2 run to take a five point lead into the second half.
The Barons would cut the lead down to three points in the early going of the third quarter, but then an Allegheny 8-0 run would give them their first double-digit lead of the day. They would win the third quarter by nine points to make it a tall task for the Barons to come back from 14 points in the final quarter. Franciscan would give it their all though, as the last quarter would be their best of the day. An opening 5-0 run, including another Melnyk three pointer, cut the lead to nine points. Melnyk would score 10 of Franciscan's 20 points in the fourth to make it interesting, but the Gators would prevail 63-52.

Up Next
Franciscan will return home to take on Grove City on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. The Barons are looking to snap a streak of eight straight losses to the Wolverines, as they have not beaten them since November of 2015 at home. In that 71-62 win, now Assistant Coach, Iliana Spoelman dropped 33 points on 4-5 shooting from three to lead the Barons to a huge non-conference win.
