How It Happened
Franciscan Women's Basketball fresh off their win over Illinois Institute of Technology on Friday night, made it two wins in a row, as they took down Wooster on their home floor on Saturday. The win moves the Barons to 2-1 on the season for their best start since they started 2-1 in the 2007-08 season, their first as a NCAA Division III program.
It would be all Barons in the opening quarter. The Barons' defense would force 29 turnovers in this game with 14 coming in the first quarter. The Barons would score 16 points off of those turnovers with 14 of their points coming in the paint to take a 22-9 lead after 10 minutes of play. The Fighting Scots would settle in during the second quarter, as the action would be much more back and forth. The Barons would expand upon their lead to take a 15-point advantage into the second half.
Wooster would chip away early in the third quarter, as they would pull within six points at one time. Franciscan answered as they were able to hold a commanding 12-point lead into the fourth quarter. That is where it got a little dicey, as Madison and Mikayla Doan would foul out of the game in the first three minutes of the final quarter. With five minutes to play in the game, the Franciscan lead would just be one point. Wooster would manage to tie the game twice, and it would be tied with one minute left to play. Ilena Gonzales would make a clutch and one bucket in the paint with 27 seconds left to give the Barons a three-point lead that they would retain to pick up the win.
After the game, Wooster released the Nan Nichols Classic All-Tournament Team. Madison Doan was named Tournament MVP, and Mikayla Doan was named to the All-Tournament Team.
