How It Happened
Franciscan made the short trip up to Geneva on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Golden Tornadoes for the first time in the 2023-24 season. Action would be very back and forth in the opening 20 minutes, but then Geneva would find their groove to take command of this one in the second half.
Caroline Reedy made the first two buckets to start this game and give Franciscan a 4-0 edge. Clow and Conner each made three pointers later on in the opening quarter to help the Barons retain the lead. Mikayla Doan made the final bucket of the quarter to give Franciscan a 12-11 lead after 10 minutes of play.
After just 23 points combined in the opening quarter, both offenses would get going in the second quarter. Gonzales and McCallen would combine to score the first nine Franciscan points while the Barons would maintain the lead. Clow would connect on her second three pointer to give Franciscan a six-point edge at 29-23 with less than four minutes remaining in the first half. The Golden Tornadoes would score 10 points in the final three minutes to take a one point lead into the second half.
Geneva would roll that positive momentum into a run in the second half. Five minutes into the third quarter, they would build the lead up to eight points with decent shooting and better defense. They would score 40 points in the second half while holding Franciscan to 20.0% shooting from the floor to come out with the victory.
