How It HappenedÂ
Franciscan made a short trip up north to Hiram on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Terriers in a non-conference matchup. The Barons were in search of their first win all-time against them, as the Terriers beat the Barons in their previous two meetings in 2015 and 2016.Â
The Barons would not make it easy on themselves, as Hiram would jump out to a 10-1 lead after three minutes of play. Maria McCallen and Mikayla Doan would snap the Hiram run with one made field goal each to set the score at 17-5. Caroline Reedy would add five points in the final minute of the opening quarter, including a buzzer-beating three pointer to give the Barons some positive momentum heading into the second quarter.
The defense would be the talk of the second quarter, as neither team would score in the opening two and a half minutes. The Doan sisters would get the Barons on the board, as they would score the first six points for the Barons this quarter. The Barons would hold the Terriers to just 11 points this quarter to chip into the deficit. Hiram led 35-24 at halftime.Â
Madison Doan would spark the Franciscan offense in the second half, as she scored 17 of her team-high 23 points in the second half. The Barons would play the Terriers even in the third quarter to trail by eleven, as they headed into the fourth quarter. The Terriers would pull away, as Brooke Hickman would score a game-high 30 points to lead them to victory.
Inside the NumbersÂ
- Madison Doan led the Barons with 23 points and 14 rebounds.
- Natalie Conner had seven assists.
- The Terriers scored 52 points in the paint.Â
Up NextÂ
Franciscan will now take some time off for Christmas, as they do not return to competition until December 30th at Wittenberg. This will be the first time that the Barons will take on the Tigers in program history. Wittenberg won 21 games last season, and they are off to a strong start this season in non-conference play. They will tip at 2:00 p.m. in Springfield, Ohio.
