How It Happened
The Franciscan Men's Lacrosse team took their first loss of the season at home to the Marietta Pioneers. The Barons jumped out to an early lead, but ceded two goals allowing the Pioneers to tie it up before the end of the 1st quarter. Faceoffs hurt the Barons early. In the first minute of play in the second quarter, the Barons lost back-to-back faceoffs that quickly translated into Pioneer goals. After one minute of play in the second quarter the Barons found themselves in a 4-2 hole. Dominic Scordino found the back of the net to stifle the Pioneer run and bring the Barons back to within one goal, but late in the first half the defense lost a man sitting just off the left post and the Pioneers went into the half break leading 5-3.
The 3rd quarter was back and forth with neither team showing a limit to the amount of fight they were willing to bring. After watching his team give up three more goals, Samuel Marshall took matters in his own hands. Marshall took the ball after a Pioneer shot sailed wide and bulldozed his way down the field. He knocked down not one, not two, not three, but four defenders completing the clear single handedly. Each Pioneer that stepped up to stop him found themselves staring into the rainy night sky. After clearing the ball himself Marshall ran a quick give and go to bring the score to 8-5. The excitement from this play didn't carry long enough. The 4th quarter spelled trouble. The Barons racked up a penalties, continued to struggle in the faceoff circle, and were outscored 4-1 to finish the game.
