How It HappenedÂ
The Barons traveled to Meadville, Pa to face the #2 seed Allegheny Gators. After a very tight first 28 minutes, the Barons fell to the Gators 12-6.
Started off the game giving up a quick goal from a cutter that broke free down the middle of the defense. Theresa Lyle won the proceeding draw control. After a few screens to try and get Grace Deegan open, Deegan was fouled inside 15 and awarded a free position. She did what she does best and converted that to a goal. The next two Gator trips' down the field resulted in free positions, but the 1st team all-conference goalie stopped them both. Once both teams were settled down from the early game jitters we were tied at one a piece.Â
The Barons took the lead at 2-1 with a wheel play between Ashley Morisey and Joanna Hilkert. Hilkert wheeled around from behind the net and Morisey dropped a dime up and over three defenders to find Hilkert with a wide open shooting lane 3 yds from the goal. Late in the 1st quarter a Gator attacker found a crease in the defense and tried to run through it with the ball. Riley O'Brien pivoted off her man and laid the hurt to the shooter. The Gators got another free position and Bronwyn caught the shooter from behind to knock the ball out and knock her down in front of the goal. The Gator shooter having been rocked twice in less than 30 seconds, chose to gingerly toss her second free position at the goal without running forward. Kane made the easy save and retained the Baron lead.
The flurry of goal scoring continued into the second half. At the end of the 3rd quarter the Barons were down 11-6. For the 4th quarter they held break with the Gators allowing only 1 goal, but were unable to make any headway on the Gator lead.Â
