Franciscan 7, Washington & Jefferson 2
Doubles
#1's
Maria Herrera and
Olivia Colby:
The top Franciscan pair were very comfortable for their doubles match. The dynamic duo had complete control of the court. The Presidents' hitters were all over trying to return shots while the Barons sat back. This was the first doubles match to finish and a quick 10-0 route.
#2's
Claire Cardie and
Veronica Saunders:
The #2 hitters had a close one that came down to the wire. With the score 6-5, the Barons had to focus in and get two clutch game points to finish the doubles match.
Veronica Saunders charged the net and hit a winner down the left side of the court. Her shot was out of reach for the Presidents' pair.
#3's
Jordan Beltavski and
Delaney Dawson:
The young #3's pair had to fight a little harder than their teammates for the win***. What was nice to see were the young hitters playing with confidence swinging hard and through the ball. As the season goes on, I am very intrigued to see how this pair's chemistry develops and how they perform at the end of the year compared to now.
Going into singles play the Barons were leading 3-0 in the team competition.
Singles
Herrera would be first to finish at #1 with a straight sets win to keep her undefeated conference record intact. Colby would be next to finish as #2, as she won the opening set, but her playing partner would have to withdraw in the second set.
Claire Cardie would stretch the lead to 6-0 with a straight sets win at #3.
Hazel Mistry made her collegiate debut at the #6 spot. She showed flashes but fell in straight sets to put the Presidents on the board. At #5, Saunders would win the first set in commanding fashion, but then drop the next two sets. Then in the final match,
Jordan Beltavski dropped the opening set. The freshman would dig deep to rally and win the next two sets to remain unbeaten in conference play.
