How It Happened
Franciscan Women's Basketball got Kuzma Day off to a great start with a win over Thiel in game one of the PAC conference doubleheader. They did so in a big way, as they set their program scoring record with 89 points to break their losing streak.
The Barons would get off to a hot start in the opening quarter with 21 points. It would be a balanced attack with six different Barons registering a point with 18 of those points coming in the paint. Natalie Conner made the lone three, as the Barons would lead 21-9 at the first break. The Barons would be able to add to the lead in the second quarter. The Barons would continue to exploit their height advantage with 12 more points this quarter coming in the paint. Ilena Gonzales would lead the Barons at the break with nine points, as all seven Barons that were dressed for today's matchup had scored in the opening half.
The Barons offense would stay hot in the second half. Mikayla Doan would lead the way in the third, as McCallen would see some time on the bench due to foul trouble. Doan led the charge in the paint, as the Barons would score 14 more points in the paint this quarter. They took a commanding 61-34 lead into the final quarter. The Barons would remain on the offensive attack, as they shot 60.0% from the field in the final quarter. With just under four minutes to play, Caroline Reedy would make a tough jumper to give the Barons 80 points for the first time this year. Then the Barons would pass the all-time scoring record for most points in a game. The previous record was 86 points in an 86-49 win over Penn State Behrend in January of 2014. The Barons would earn the win by a score of 89-53.
