How It HappenedÂ
Yann Yonkeu recorded his first career double double on the way to a big team victory at home. The boys from the Ville had a chip on their shoulders after allowing the Gators to come into town last year and spoil the community night at Steubenville High School.
The Barons came out swinging and swallowed up the Gator ball screen offense. The defense led to offense tonight leading to the best team shooting percentage on the year.
After the first media timeout in the second half, the Barons made a final adjustment to their defense and shored up their offensive strategy. Coming out of that timeout, the energy coming from the Barons was overflowing while the Gators looked like they wanted to escape to the warmth of the bus. The clock ticked down and the lead kept creeping up.Â
In the final minutes, the Gators attempted a press, but that phased the Barons none. On their way to an impressive offensive day they held the top Gator scorer to only three points.Â
The most satisfying sight is to see the future check into the game with three minutes left. With three minutes remaining, Tommy Kristian, James Maholm, Joseph Ehinger, Aiden Townsend, and Alan Wood took the floor for the victory march. The buzzer rang, Dean Martin sang, and the Barons improved to 3-6 in the conference and are a game out of playoff position.
Inside the NumbersÂ
-Five Barons scored in the double digitsÂ
-The Barons had 27 points off turnovers to the Gators 4
-Karl Yonkeu led the Barons in scoring with 17
-The Barons were a season best 19-23 from the line
Up NextÂ
Franciscan will now set their focus on Bethany, who they will host on Wednesday evening. These two teams met in November with the Bison winning 85-63. The Bison picked up three conference wins last semester, which matched their total from all of last season. They have been scuffling as of late, as they have not won since December 12th.Â
