How It HappenedÂ
Franciscan made the trip to Waynesburg on Saturday morning for their third PAC game of the season and first meeting with the Yellow Jackets of the 2024 season. The Barons would maintain their recent success against them, as they would win in four sets to earn their first PAC win of the season.
The opening set had a back-and-forth start that would result in a 4-4 score before the Barons made a 5-0 run.
Mary Jean Cadman had a pair of kills in that run, and
Elizabeth Luebbers added her first of the day. King and Clyde added a couple of kills as the Barons ran the lead up to 10 points at 22-12. Waynesburg made a late run, but the Barons would hold them off to win the opening set 25-19.
The Yellow Jackets responded in the second set, as they raced out to a 15-7 edge. A Franciscan 3-0 run would get the Barons back in this set, as
Madison Doan picked up her first ace of the day. After a kill from Luebbers, the Barons would cut the deficit to three points at 20-17, but that would be as close as they would get to the lead. The Yellow Jackets would win 25-19 to even up the match at one set apiece.Â
In the third set, the Barons trailed 5-4, but then took the lead thanks to a 4-0 run. Both teams would exchange runs as Franciscan lost the lead but earned it right back and took the lead up to 13-10. They would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the set. At 24-20, Waynesburg answered with three straight points, but then
Mary Jean Cadman got a kill to close out the set.Â
The fourth set had a very close start, just like all of the other sets. With the score at 11-10, Franciscan made their move with a 6-0 run to take the seven-point advantage. They did not look back, as they had several kills and played strong defense to close out the set 25-15.Â
