How It Happened
Freshmen Mara, O'Leary nabbed her first collegiate goal and the game-winner in the waning minutes of the first half. Off a corner kick opportunity, Elmore placed the ball mid-net. The ball landed right in front of O'Leary, it took one bounce off a defenders chest which created an opening in the wall of defenders. O'Leary took the opportunity and buried the ball in the back of the net.
The Barons played excellent defense in the first half, and coach was looking to continue that effort. In his halftime interview, he stated, "we just need to focus on continuing this shutout...We don't have to score anymore." Well, he was right that they didn't need to, and his wish of solid defense continuing the shutout was answered, but the Barons weren't satisfied.
Catherine DeWolf deked her way through defenders and sent heaters on the net. The Winnogradoff sisters kept placing perfect long balls for Dexter to run down. Watching the second half reminded me of my childhood years watching Barry Sanders play. Every time the Barons played the long ball to Dexter you hold your breath in anticipation, because every touch could be a home run with her. She made run after run, willing her way past multiple defenders. If not for the excellent play from the President goalkeeper, Dexter could have easily set a single-game scoring record today.
The big news on the night is with this win goalkeeper
Rebekka Dill now has 24 wins placing her atop the record book in career wins. This is her 14th career shutout and it was not an easy one. The President forwards sent heaters at her and a couple times at point blank range. Tonight Dill was locked in and was always in the right spot. Her 7 saves were crucial in the Barons win and a great performance to commemerate her new spot on top.
Inside the Numbers
-This is the second game in a row Dexter took 14 shots
-Dill recorded 7 saves
-
Teaghan Elmore's assist is her first of the year
Who's Next?
Franciscan will get right back into action on Friday at Westminster. The Barons are 3-8-1 all-time against the Titans, but they came out on top last time they played in New Wilmington. That game was the PAC Semifinal last season. Gabrielle De La Torre opened up the scoring in the 14th minute, but then the Titans would answer eight minutes later. It would be a 1-1 game entering the second half, and
Juliana Rubino would find the back of the net to give Franciscan the lead that they held the rest of the game. This season, Westminster started off slow in non-conference play, but htey have won back-to-back PAC games to hold a 2-0 conference record.
