How It Happened
The Barons finish their tough week of facing the top two teams in the PAC with the #2 Waynesburg Yellow Jackets. Waynesburg came into tonight's contest scoring 62 goals good for the top offense in the PAC and to no surprise the top goal scorer in the PAC in #34 Mohrbacher.
From the opening kick, the Barons defense was stifling. Giguere had to make two saves early on, but after that the Baron defense didn't allow a shot on goal until for the rest of the half. The Yellow Jackets next shot on goal was the unfortunate one that led to the game-winning goal. Waynesburg played a deep ball into the box to the aforementioned #34. She was sandwiched between two Baron defenders. The ball bounced in front of the trio, so Giguere stayed back in net. The ball then bounced up over everyone's head. Giguere reacted and started to come out of the net. The small moment of indecision put her in a tough spot. Mohrbacher turned around to find the ball at here feet and the keeper out of the net a few feet in front of her. She was able to put her foot on the ball and send it to the right net for a goal. A very unlucky play for what was otherwise an incredible defensive performance.
Late in the second, the Barons finally began to build some pressure on the offensive end. The Barons were served a DeWolf special. A free kick five yards off the corner of the box. She has scored on these free kicks multiple times this year, and she came just inches from sneaking this one under the crossbar. That was the Barons closest chance at tying the game. An unfortunate stoppage due to an injury on the field gave both teams a free timeout. Waynesburg used that time to regroup and coming out of that never allowed a Baron attack to culminate.
Inside the Numbers
- Giguere made 5 saves
- the Barons still sit in 7th place just outside playoff position
Who's Next?
Franciscan remains at home to take on Allegheny on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Barons are 2-1 all-time against the Gators, but they lost last season up in Meadville. The Barons held a 1-0 edge at half with
Eva Dexter scoring in the 31st minute. A pair of second half goals by the Gators proved to be enough, as they won by that 2-1 margin. Both Allegheny and Franciscan are fighting for one of the six playoff spots available with the winner of this match potentially having the upper hand with just a few regular season games left to play.
