How It Happened
Franciscan Women's Basketball played a third consecutive road game to start the 2025-26 season, as they traveled to Wooster on Tuesday afternoon. The Fighting Scots took the win tonight, as the Barons fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Fighting Scots brought the energy of their home opener and turned it into points in the early going, as they started the game on a 10-0 run. The bench scored 10 points for the Barons in the opening quarter, as
Abbigail Jannuzi led the way with a pair of three-point field goals. Unfortunately, the Barons put up just 13 points, but they only trailed by four, heading into the second quarter.
The Fighting Scots made the Barons pay for some turnovers in the second quarter, as they took eight more shots in the second quarter than they did in the first. That resulted in 18 points for them, and the Barons struggled from the floor this quarter. Simon and Melnyk got in the scoring column, but the Barons headed into halftime trailing 35-21.
Wooster came out of the break firing on all cylinders, as a 16-2 run over the opening five minutes gave them a commanding lead. Melnyk and Simon each got into a rhythm, but they were not able to match the 34 points from the Fighting Scots in the third quarter. In the fourth, Melnyk continued her strong second half with 12 points in the final 10 minutes. The defense also stepped up to hold Wooster to 13 points and beat them in the quarter 17-13. That would not be enough as the Fighting Scots took the win.
Inside the Numbers
- Melnyk led the Barons with 20 points. That is the most she has scored in a game as a Baron since she scored 21 points against La Roch during her sophomore season.
- Melnyk pulled in 10 rebounds to give her three consecutive double double.
- Wooster scored 31 points off turnovers
