How It HappenedÂ
Franciscan honored a trio of seniors,
Mary Jean Cadman,
Mariah Matzinger Lash, and
Mary Updike, before the match. In front of a packed Finnegan Fieldhouse, the Barons delivered with another win in four sets to head to the postseason with a win.Â
The first set did not go as planned, as Waynesburg controlled it in the early going. Sloppy play from the service line both ways was the early story, as 11 aces and nine service errors took place. The Barons rallied back to tie it up five different times, and then went on to take a 24-21 edge. The Yellow Jackets rallied five straight points to stun the Barons and take the first set.Â
Set two may have been more stressful, as the score was tied 16 different times. The defense really stepped up for the Barons with 7.0 total blocks in the set.
Logan Hickey and
Mary Jean Cadman added eight of the 11 kills in the set to help the Barons win 25-23.
Hickey continued her excellent play in the third with six more.
Therese Heisler added a couple as well, as the Barons' offense was much more efficient in the third set. A 9-0 Franciscan run to end the set gave them a 25-17 win.
The fourth set was close at the start, but then it was all Franciscan. Hickey had her best set of the night with seven kills of the Barons' 14 kills in this set. Sara Clyde led the defense with 10.0 total blocks on the night, as the Barons added four more blocks this set. A pair of 6-0 Franciscan runs made this set stress-free, as the Barons won the set by 12 points.Â
With the win, the Barons conclude the regular season with a record of 12-12 to claim the #3 spot in the PAC South for the upcoming PAC Championship Tournament.
