How It HappenedÂ
Franciscan Women's Basketball was able to earn the first win of the 2025-26 season on Saturday to go 1-1 on the New York Trip. Three Barons scored in double-digits, as Melnyk led them with 13 points and 17 rebounds.
The opening half was a tale of two quarters. The Barons held the Broncos to 9.1% shooting in the opening quarter and just six points for the first 10 minutes. The Barons were able to put up 18 points and take a 12-point lead into the second quarter. Suny Delhi got the offense going in the second quarter to close the gap.
Caroline Reedy led the Barons with eight first half points to hold a 29-21 lead at the half.
The Barons' offense heated up in the second half, as they shot 45% from the floor in the third and 80% from the free throw line. That resulted in 20 points to the Broncos' eight, as they took a massive lead into the fourth.
Isa Saez-Pedraza and
Abbigail Jannuzi made a couple of buckets in the fourth to reach double digits, and Melnyk poured it on to fill out the score sheet. SUNY Delhi had the best offensive quarter, but it was too little to late, as the Barons won by 24 points.
