How It HappenedÂ
Coming into Saturday's contest the Barons were loosely holding on to the final playoff spot in 6th. Earlier in the week they had a chance to clinch with a win over Thiel, but their overtime loss meant two things needed to happen. The Barons needed to go on the road and defeat the 3rd place Presidents and the Allegheny Gators needed to lose to Bethany. Both prerequisites were a tall order.
The Barons' strength is in their midfield. They are well over .500 in games that they have the upper hand in draw controls and far below that when they lose that statistic. On Saturday that statistic was not on their side. They were slightly out-manuevered in the midfield winning 13 draw controls compared to their opponents 18. The Presidents strong defense became the difference in the game. The Barons were limited with their possessions and failed eight clears. While the Presidents only failed one clear and scored at a high rate with the possessions they did earn.Â
In all it was a highly successful season. The Baron women accomplished far more than any of their opponents thought they would competing for a playoff spot when most thought they'd finish the season near the bottom of the league. A big testament to the effort of the new players, the upperclassmen leadership, and the coaching acumen of first year coach Lewis. Congratulations to the women. We wish the seniors our best as they go out into the world and are excited for the returners and how they grow next season.
