How It Happened
The Barons traveled to Saint Vincent to open up PAC play against a perennial contender Bearcats. This season the Bearcats were polled as a 4th place finisher in the preseason. As the season has shaken out the Bearcats have gained momentum rolling to a 6-1 start. Coach Miller was aware of the challenge and wanted to focus on limiting mistakes and capitalizing on any mistakes the Bearcats gifted us.
Seeing how each team's non-conference schedule shaped them for conference play was an interesting one as the game began. Each team took their turn controlling the ball and pressuring the goaltender. Slowly, the Bearcats took more and more of a share of the possession time. Eventually that possession time turned into an opening goal in the 17'. The false sense of security in the Bearcats combined with a heightened sense of security led to a quick answer by Igot scoring her first collegiate goal. Each team held par into the second half.
The rain picked up in the second half and so did the scoring. The Bearcats took a 2-1 lead in the 67', and the Barons answered right back in the 78'. The Bearcats prolific scorer Koller scored her 6th goal of the season in the 81', and the Bearcats felt surely that would be enough to put the Barons away. Nope,
Bella Urso found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal in the 84' minute off a DeWolf free kick.
Three times the Bearcats scored and three times the Barons found the immediate answer back.
Coach Miller had this to say after the game; "[I'm] happy with the energy that came out of the team. The rainy wet conditions were tough and the field was fast making it tough to play the game of soccer and execute any strategy. We knew the game was going to be a battle of restarts", which the Barons dominated. "It shows a lot about character to come back after three goals scored to answer and tie the game. [I'm] happy because they were able to implement and execute strategies that were given both before the game and during the game. Saint Vincent was picked to finish high in the conference, so it's a postivie to be able to come away with a point. It was one of those games where you had to scrappy and they did a good job getting stuck in and competing. Today's efforts shows that they can compete in the PAC".
