Women's Volleyball Plays in Home Tri-Match with Hiram, John Carroll

Franciscan 1, Hiram 3

How It Happened
Franciscan women's volleyball hosted its second and final tri-match of the season Saturday afternoon, hosting conference opponent Hiram and John Carroll. After the action subsided, the Barons fell short against both opponents, losing 3-1 to Hiram and 3-0 to the Blue Streaks.

In set one of the Hiram match, Franciscan had a great opening jumping out to a 12-5 lead before Hiram called its first timeout. Kills by Anna Guard, Tessa Miler, and Sarah Clyde spurred the run. The Terriers quickly erased the lead, scoring the next seven points and continually overcoming small deficits to tie it at 21. At the deadlock, the visitors scored the final four points to win the frame.

In the second set, numerous deadlocks occurred. There were ties at 1-1, 4-4, 5-5, 9-9, 10-10, 11-11, 12-12, and 15-15. With neither team able to build on a lead, kills by Guard and Logan Hickey kept the Barons offense in it. On the brink of losing set two at 25-24 and 26-25, the Barons scored the final three points to win 28-26 and deadlock the match at one apiece.

Set three had Franciscan in control for most of the frame, despite not having a lead bigger than three. Down 18-16, the Terriers scored nine of the next 10 points to put the squad a point away from winning set three. After a mistake offensively from Hiram on the next point, a successful kill led to a 25-21 Hiram set win.

Franciscan held a 5-4 lead early in set four, but would not be able to tie or lead in the rest of the set after a 7-1 Hiram run. The Barons would get within one point at two different times, but a 4-0 run late to cut it to 22-20 Hiram was followed up by three straight Hiram points for the Terriers 3-1 victory in tri-match #1.

How It Happened
After the energetic opening two matches, which included a reverse sweep by the Blue Streaks over the Terriers, the Barons went on to face John Carroll to conclude the action.

Action in the first set was back and forth, with kills by Guard and Logan Hickey pacing the Barons throughout. After a 15-14 Franciscan advantage to start, John Carroll scored 11 of the final 13 points to win set one by seven.

Set three was the most back-and-forth set of the match, with numerous ties and no lead bigger than three. Sarah Clyde, Carolina Linklater, Logan Hickey, and Guard all recorded kills in this frame. Tied at 21, the Barons scored three of the next four to be a point away from forcing a fourth set. However, a John Carroll timeout sparked a comeback, with the visitors scoring the final four points to get the sweep and win set three 26-24.
