How It Happened
In her penultimate home game of her storied career,
Jazzlyn Melnyk was the story tonight. With her third rebound of the night, which came a little over halfway through the first quarter, she passed Lacey Huck to become the program leader in rebounds. To add to the accolades, with a three-point field goal in the fourth, she became just the third Baron in program history to reach 1,000 career points.
The Barons' offense started slow, but the defense played hard. They responded with a 14-point effort in the second quarter by shooting 54.3% from the floor in that quarter. At the half,
Maria McCallen led the Barons with six points, and
Emma Clow added five points. The Cougars got hot from beyond the arc in the third quarter. They shot 7-9 from deep and scored 28 points in the quarter to expand the lead. The Barons played hard till the end and responded with a better fourth quarter, including Melnyk's three-pointer that gave her 1,000 points.
Angelina Beath scored six points in just seven minutes, while being a spark off the bench. Chatham secured the win, but it was indeed a historic day in Steubenville.
