STEUBENVILLE – In a rain soaked quarterfinal match, the fourth-seeded Franciscan soccer team lit up the scoreboard with a 6-1 win over No. 5 D'Youville Saturday afternoon in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference quarterfinal match.
The win for the Barons improved their win total to 12, setting the program's single-season win record. Sophomore
Brian Gaughan earned his 12
th win in net for the Barons, as well this season, as he holds the individual single-season win record and his three saves pushed his save total to 82 for the year, also a single-season record for the Barons.
Franciscan wasted little time to grab the lead as sophomore
Sebastian Koehler scored just after the clock clicked past minute into action. Freshman
Nick Miller controlled the ball close to the sideline in front of the D'Youville bench and lofted the ball into the box and Koehler used his head, literally, to gain control and freeze the Spartan keeper in his tracks. Koehler sent the ball into the back of the net for his team-leading ninth goal of the season and the 1-0 lead for the Barons.
After 33 minutes of the Barons putting pressure on the Spartan back line, Franciscan pushed its lead to 2-0 with sophomore
JP Bobak's third goal of the season. Bobak drew a foul just inside the box as he gained control of the ball to set up a penalty kick in the 35
th minute. Bobak went low and to the right to beat the Spartan keeper with what turned out to be the game-winning goal for Franciscan. With less than four minutes to play, the Spartans broke up the shutout as Hunter Sherman pulled Gaughan off his line and gained control of the loose ball in the box. Sherman made a move around Gaughan for his eighth goal of the season.
Franciscan carried the 2-1 lead into the break.
Coming out of the intermission, the Spartans and Barons traded shots on goal but both goalies made a save to keep the slim 2-1 advantage for Franciscan. In the 51
st minute, Bobak received the ball to the left of the Spartan goal and after making a move around the defender, threaded the ball inside the far right post in the upper corner for his fourth goal of the year and the 3-1 lead for Franciscan.
Bobak's second goal of the game seemingly broke open the floodgates for Franciscan as the Barons controlled the pace of play for the rest of the contest. Just over 11 minutes later, Miller gave Franciscan a 4-1 lead as he shot the ball into the upper 90 from just outside the box for his sixth goal of the year. Miller wasted little time getting his seventh goal of the season as he took a shot from about 15 yards out in front of the net that ricocheted from the left goal post to inside the right in the 66
th minute and the 5-1 Baron lead.
Senior
Brennan McNamara put the finishing touches on the impressive quarterfinal win as he score his third goal of the year with just over five minutes to play. Senior
Jude Ledyard chipped the ball into McNamara for a strike from about 18 yards out and the 6-1 win.
Ledyard put one more shot on net for the Barons but the Spartan keeper made a final save and the final horn sounded on a cold and rainy day.
The Barons out-shot the Spartans 32-8, including 16-2 in the second half. Franciscan held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
"I am just really proud of how these guys played today," remarked head coach
Christian Bobak. "It was just a complete team win. Nick and JP really played well. JP put the team on his back and I could not be more proud of this win."
The Barons' season continues as they head to the top-seeded Penn St.-Behrend on Wednesday for a 7:30 pm AMCC semifinals match.
