Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Franciscan softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent, La Roche, Friday afternoon.
The Lady Barons scored four runs between the fourth and fifth innings to propel them to an 11-5 comeback win in the second game after taking the first game 13-4.
Trailing 5-2 going into the top of the fourth, senior Lindsey Finch reached first and advanced to second on an error to lead off the inning. Freshman Victoria Clute moved Finch over to third with a sacrifice bunt and sophomore Kathleen Thompson singled to put two runners on. Dennise Carrazco popped up to shortstop, but it was deep enough to allow Thompson and Finch to tag up and move up a base, Finch crossing home to cut the lead to 5-3. Freshman Allyson Weiss followed up with a single up the middle to bring home Thompson and get the Lady Barons to within one.
The Redhawks opened the bottom of the frame with back-to-back singles and head coach Jim Walker brought in freshman Andi Queen to pitch. Queen was able to get the three batters she faced out to keep the deficit to one run. With two outs in the top of the fifth, Thompson tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI single through the left side as Finch came around to score. Carrazco was able to reach on an error that brought home Clute to give FUS a 6-5 lead after five innings.
After Queen once again held La Roche scoreless, Franciscan added an insurance run in the sixth as junior Anna Ames grounded out with runners on second and third and sophomore, Anna Fluharty scored to give Franciscan a 7-5 cushion.
The Lady Barons tacked on four runs in the seventh to seal their 11-5 win behind five hits. With two outs and one on, Weiss smashed a home run to left before sophomore Kayla Anderson tripled down the right-field line with Ashley Kondracki and Fluharty on base.
Queen threw a perfect seventh, including a pair of strikeouts for the win.
Franciscan got on the board early in the second game with a pair of runs in the first, but La Roche answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning and another in the bottom of the third for the 5-2 lead.
In the first game, Franciscan scored in every inning of the six-inning affair for the win. The Lady Barons got it started with two runs on two hits and a pair of walks to take a 2-0 lead. The Redhawks got on back in the bottom of the inning but Queen was able to get out of the inning with minimal damage.
Franciscan pushed its lead to 4-1 in the top of the second as Weiss singled to shortstop and Clute was able to score. After Fluharty was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Kondracki singled through the left side to bring home Thompson. The Lady Barons added two more runs in the third and fourth innings before La Roche got two back in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 9-3 after four innings. Kondracki made it 10-3 with a double to right center.
La Roche scored in the bottom of the fifth to make it 10-4 but sophomore Jayln Effertz came into pitch and got the final out.
Franciscan went off for three runs on three hits and benefited from two errors to take a 13-4 lead after the sixth. Thompson brought home Ames with an infield single before she scored on a throwing error by the catcher with Carrazco was stealing second. Weiss finished off the scoring as she reached on an error by the shortstop and Carrazco came around to score.
Effertz pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the six, aided by Carrazco throwing out a La Roche batter attempting to stretch a single into a double to seal the win for Franciscan.
Franciscan returns home after the pair of wins tomorrow as the Lady Barons welcome Medaille to Steubenville for an AMCC doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm.
