Box Score 2 STEUBENVILLE – Freshman Andi Queen tossed a complete-game shutout in the second game as the Franciscan softball team split an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader with visiting Pitt.-Bradford, Monday afternoon. Franciscan won the second game 3-0 after dropping the first 6-3.
The Lady Barons plated three runs in the bottom of the first and it was all the run support Queen needed for the complete-game win. After a 1-2-3 top of the first, aided by a double play ball, the Franciscan bats got to work. With one out, freshman Allyson Weiss doubled to deep left field before stealing third. Sophomore Anna Fluharty singled to center to bring home Weiss for the 1-0 lead. Kayla Anderson made it a three-run game with one swing of the bat as she sent the ball over the centerfield fence.
Queen posted back to back 1-2-3 innings in the second and the third to keep the Panthers off of the board. The Panthers had runners on the corners with one out in the top of the fourth, but Queen got a pair of groundouts to end the inning. The Panthers did not have a runner get past second for the rest of the game.
Franciscan's three runs in the first were all the team needed to win the second game.
The Lady Barons held a 3-1 lead going into the sixth inning of the first game before the Panthers came back with three runs in the top of the frame to take a 4-3 lead. The Panthers added two more in the seventh to seal the 6-3 win.
Franciscan had two runners on with just one out in the bottom of the seventh but could not complete the comeback as a strikeout and fielder's choice ended the contest.
Pitt-Bradford jumped out to an early lead as Madison East got the Panthers on the board homerun over the center field fence with two outs. Sophomore Jayln Effertz settled after the solo shot and got the final batter of the inning to pop up to the pitching circle to end the frame.
Franciscan tied the game in the bottom of the second Anderson scored on an error by the third baseman that allowed Dennise Carrazco to reach first safely.
Franciscan took the lead in the bottom of the fifth as Weiss tripled into right field and brought home sophomore Kathleen Thompson from third. Sophomore Ashley Kondracki pushed the Lady Baron lead to 3-1 reached on an infield single and Weiss came home from third. The Lady Barons had to settle for the two runs in the inning as the Panther pitcher got the final two outs and Franciscan held the 3-1 lead after five innings.
Pitt.-Bradford took the lead after a three-run six inning for the game-one win.
Franciscan wraps up its regular season on Wednesday as the Lady Barons host Pitt.-Greensburg for a doubleheader at 3:00 pm.
