Box Score STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan women's soccer team opened Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action with an exciting 3-0 win over Medaille, Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Barons were held quiet for most of the first half until sophomore Sarah Cocozza (Ellicott City, MD/Howard) broke open the scoring with her first goal of the season. Franciscan drew a foul and were awarded a direct kick. Senior Elizabeth Dawyot (Landenberg, PA/Kennett) chose to give a quick and short one touch to Cocozza waiting to right and Cocozza buried the ball inside the near post for the 1-0 lead with just over two minutes to play in the half.
Dawyot kept the scoring going 10 minutes into the second half with her third goal of the year. The senior gained possession of the ball at the goal line right outside of the right post and dribbled it in front of the net and over the goalie to give Franciscan a 2-0 lead.
Just three minutes later and after an offside call against Franciscan, sophomore Gracie Tillman (Lost Creek, WV/Home School) netted her second goal of the season as she received a pass into the box from Dawyot and shot right to left past the keeper to give Franciscan a 3-0 lead.
The Lady Baron offense kept firing and got four more shots off, two on goal, but the Maverick keeper turned both of the shots away and the score remained 3-0 in favor of Franciscan.
The Lady Barons out-shot the Mavericks 18-0 while the corner kicks were tied 2-2.
Senior keeper Sarah Luebking (Littleton, CO/Littleton) and the Lady Baron defense earned their second shutout of the season as the defense did not allow a Maverick shot in the 90 minutes.
Franciscan returns to action on Tuesday as the Lady Barons travel to Chatham for a 7:30 pm non-conference tilt.
