BUFFALO, NY – The Franciscan men's soccer team set a program record with 50 shots in the Barons 6-0 win over Hilbert in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference action, Saturday afternoon.
The Barons held a 50-5 advantage in shots and a 25-1 edge in shots on goal for the game. The only shot on goal for the Hawks came in the 24th minute and sophomore keeper Brian Gaughan (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) made the only save of the game for the Baron goalies.
Franciscan scored early and often in the first half as three different Barons got on the scoresheet in a 10-minute span. Sophomore Sebastian Koehler (Ashburn, VA/Seton Home Study) got the Barons on the board as he took a long cross from classmate JP Bobak (Grand Island, NY/Canisius) from the back of the box and shot the ball past a diving Hawk goalie for the 1-0 lead 6:47 into action. Just under seven minutes later, freshman Nick Miller (Galena, OH/Olentangy) blasted a hard shot outside of the box past the goalie thanks to a quick assist from junior Ian Baldau (Las Vegas, NV/St. Michael's). Three and a half minutes later, senior Michael Bobak (Grand Island, NY/Canisius) shot from close range to give Franciscan a 3-0 lead in the 17th minute.
Freshman Mikey Irvin (Steubenville, OH/Catholic Central) scored his first of two goals in a five-minute period at 33:15 as he blasted the ball into the back of the net. Just under five minutes later, Irvin gave Franciscan a 5-0 lead as he took a long pass from junior Chip Dougherty (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny) and snuck it past the keeper with seven minutes to play before halftime.
Senior Jude Ledyard (Laguna Niguel, CA/Catholic Central) scored his first career goal with 18:46 to play in regulation as he headed home a high cross from senior Daniel Vander Woude (Simpsonville, KY/Immaculate Classical Academy).
JP Bobak led the offense with 13 shots, 10 on goal, just one shot shy of the Barons' single-game record. Gaughan earned the win in net for the Barons but all four goalies saw time in net for the Barons. Sophomore Claudio Ferrari (Worcester, MA/Bancroft School) relieved Gaughan with 15:41 to play in the first half and did not face a shot. Freshman Will Mooney (Nokesville, VA/Seton) started the second half for the Barons and classmate Joshua Schutte (Dayton, OH/Home School) finished out the final 19:46 in goal. Neither Mooney nor Schutte faced a shot on goal in the final 45 minutes of action.
Franciscan returns to action on Wednesday when the Barons host La Roche in an AMCC showdown at 4:15 pm.
