Westminster Hands Basketball Their Second Loss

NEW WILMINGTON, PA - Westminster proves to be too much for Franciscan as a late run was not enough as the Titans win 66-59.

How it Happened
  • Joe Vernau opened up Saturday's action with a layup shortly followed up by a John Noce layup as the Barons would lead 4-3. That would prove to be the Barons last lead to the game as the Titans would come out strong in the first half. Joe Schriner added a jumper to tie the game up at 6 with 17:02 left in the contest. Westminster would turn it on as a 14-1 run over the next five minutes gave them a 20-7 edge. Isaac Stamatiades score five of his game high 27 points during that run to lead the Titans. Noce and Dalton Davis finally responded by hitting a pair of jumpers, but the Titans would be too much in the first half as they held Franciscan to 24 points in th half while going 0-7 from deep. 
  • Noce started the second half off with a layup for the Barons, two of his team high twelve points on the day. Westminter would stretch the lead to 19 with a 14:01 left on a Blake Payne layup. John Noce would respond by going on a personal 6-2 run against the Titans to tighten the game back up, only to be responded to by a Titans 8-2 run to give them their largest lead of the game at 59-38 with 9:12 left in the game. The Barons would not quit as they would go on a 21-7 run to end the game. Local freshman Josh Zimmerman added five points over this stretch, and Danny Zuchak added six points in the last minute to end the game with a 66-59 loss.

Inside The Box Score
  • Seniors John Noce and Matt Trent led the way offensively for the Barons with twelve and eleven points respectively.
  • Matt Trent grabbed nine rebounds, as well as fellow senior Joe Schriner, moving him to 10th all-time in rebounding with 290. Trent still stands a top the list with 629 boards.
  • Franciscan went 0-17 from three on the day, compared to Westminster's 41.7% clip.

Franciscan does not have much time to recover and prepare yet again as they head to Pitt.-Greensburg in this years first AMCC action Tuesday night at 6pm.
