Bain Reaches 400 Saves, Lady Barons Fall to Battling Bishops

STEUBENVILLE – Senior Brittany Bain recorded her 400th career save Thursday afternoon but the visiting Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops came away with a 13-7 win over the Franciscan women's lacrosse team.

Bain reached the career-milestone just 1:30 into action as she stopped a point-blank shot from Megan McElgunn at 28:31. Bain would go on to stop 15 more shots for the game to finish with 16, two below her season high, to push her career total to 415 in three seasons. Bain holds the career records for saves (415), saves per game (10.92), and wins (20), all of which she held entering this season.

After nearly seven minutes without either team finding the back of the net, freshman Grace Deegan broke the tie with her 36th goal of the year. Freshman Margaret McKee picked up a ground ball after a OWU turnover and kicked off a successful clear. Sophomore Maria Hilkert eventually got the ball in her stick and passed it to Deegan from behind the net for the 1-0 Franciscan lead at 23:01.

Just over four minutes later, OWU tied the game as Emily Sheridan tallied her sixth of the year with 18:50 remaining. Three more unanswered goals from Ohio Wesleyan pushed its lead to 4-1 with 7:36 to play in the first. Senior Elizabeth Dawyot kicked off a three-goal run for the Lady Barons with her ninth of the season with 7:11 left. Deegan capped the run with her 37th of the season and the game-tying goal with 4:58 to play before the break.

Jenn Douglas broke the tie with the last goal of the half for OWU at 3:04 to give the Battling Bishops a 5-4 lead going into halftime.

After the intermission, the two teams once again found themselves in a defensive struggle as neither team scored in the first six and a half minutes of the second. Senior Elizabeth McEntee got on the board for the first time in the game with her 13th of the season thanks to an assist from classmate Treise McCarthy at the 23:24 mark.

The 5-5 tie would be the last of the game as Ohio Wesleyan took the lead, 6-5, for good with 21:21 to play in regulation. The Battling Bishops pushed their lead to 7-5 before Deegan picked up her third of the game at 19:18, this time thanks to an assist from senior Carly McDonald.

The two teams traded goals before OWU took the 9-7 lead with 16:50 to play. Ohio Wesleyan closed out the game with a 4-0 run to seal the 13-7 win in Steubenville.

Deegan led the Lady Barons with four goals while McDonald dished out three assists. Each of the Lady Barons' goals were assisted.

Senior Elizabeth Jordan and Bain led Franciscan with four ground balls while Dawyot caused a team-best five turnovers. Freshman Suzie Rosaschi won a game-high seven draw controls.

The Lady Barons hit the road on Saturday to face Washington & Jefferson in a 12:00 pm PAC contest.
