STEUBENVILLE – The Franciscan men's lacrosse team celebrated its two graduating seniors,
Dan McCartney and
Joe Corcoran, but a late fourth-quarter run wan not enough as the Washington & Jefferson Presidents topped the Barons, 25-4.
McCartney, a four-year starter for the Barons, will graduate as one of the all-time leaders in scoring for the Barons. He currently has 170 points behind 126 goals and 44 assists. McCartney is the all-time leader in ground balls with 288. Corcoran is a two-year member of the Franciscan squad and has played in 18 games for the Barons. The senior has 11 caused turnovers and seven ground balls in his career.
The Presidents got off to a hot start, out-scoring the Barons 16-1 in the first half. After W&J racked up an 11-0 lead, junior
Jonathan Lee got the Barons on the board with his 10
th goal of the season thanks to an assist from freshman
Jonathan Bookwalter with 4:22 to play in the second quarter.
The Presidents closed out the half with a 4-0 run in the final 3:23 to take a 16-1 lead into the break. W&J pushed its lead to 22-1 after the third with a third quarter.
W&J extended its lead to 24-1 with a pair of goals to open the fourth quarter before McCartney found a pair of unassisted goals to cut the lead to 24-3. McCartney's first goal came with 10:23 to play after he completed a successful clear and went coast-to-coast for the Barons. Lee won the ensuing faceoff to set up the Baron offense. After a Franciscan turnover gave the ball back to the Presidents, McCartney forced a turnover while W&J was trying to clear the ball and the Barons went back to action. McCartney had the ball on the crease but appeared to lose possession but scooped the ball back up as he was on the ground and slid it underneath the goalie for his 26
th goal of the year.
The Barons continued their run after Lee won the next face off and
Alex Kalpakgian picked up the ground ball. Bookwalter got the ball to junior
Michael Araps who buried his 10
th goal of the year to cut the lead to 24-4 with 9:01 to play.
The Preisdents capped the scoring with 4:40 to play with Brendan Tribeck's fourth goal of the year to give W&J the 25-4 win.
Lee led the Barons with six ground balls and won 12 face offs while Muraski caused six turnovers. Sophomore
Grant McKeown finished the day with 11 saves.
Franciscan hits the road on Wednesday as the Barons travel to Latrobe, PA to face St. Vincent in a PAC contest. The opening faceoff is set for 4:00 pm.
