PITTSBURGH, Pa. – It was a historic day for the Franciscan women's lacrosse team as the Lady Barons earned their first-ever Presidents' Athletic Conference win and set several personal and team individual game records with their 21-11 win over Chatham, Friday afternoon.
Individually, freshman
Grace Deegan had a record-setting day. Deegan broke Franciscan's freshman scoring record with her three goals and seven assists to push her season-point total to 38, the most points scored by a freshman in women's lacrosse history at Franciscan. Her 10 points and seven assists break the individual game records for the Lady Barons. As a team, the Lady Barons tied the individual point record (35) while setting the assist record with 14.
The Cougars got out to a quick 3-0 lead just two minutes into action before the Lady Barons took over. Senior
Treise McCarthy took over with her first of the game, assisted by Deegan, at the 27:40 mark to kick off a 4-0 run for the Lady Barons. Deegan assisted on two go the goals while senior
Elizabeth McEntee had the assist on the two others.
After the Cougars tied the game at 4-4, senior
Carly McDonald scored with 21:45 to play that started an 8-0 run for the Lady Barons to give them the lead for good. Chatham scored with 5:42 to play in the first but Franciscan finished the half with the last two goals to take a 14-5 lead into halftime.
After the break, the Cougars found the back of the net for the sixth time but Franciscan used another 3-0 run to push its lead to 17-6 with 26:16 to play. The Cougars got the deficit back to 10, 17-7, but freshman
Annie King and sophomore
Maria Hilkert used back-to-back goals to extend the Lady Baron lead to 19-7 with 21:43 to go.
The Lady Barons and Cougars traded the next five goals before Chatham scored back-to-back goals for the first time since the first half with 35 seconds left to wrap up the scoring at 21-11 in favor of Franciscan.
The Lady Barons improve to 4-3 on the year and sit at 1-0 in the PAC while Chatham slips to 2-6 and 0-2 in conference.
Deegan led all players with 10 points while McDonald paced the Lady Barons with five goals. McEntee finished with three goals and four assists. Senior
Brittany Bain made nine saves in cage for the Lady Barons' win.
Franciscan will return home on Tuesday as the Lady Barons host Thiel in a 5:00 pm PAC contest at Memorial Field.
