STEUBENVILLE – Another game for the Franciscan women's lacrosse team means another chance to set offensive records and the Lady Barons did just that Tuesday afternoon against Presidents' Athletic Conference opponent, Thiel. Franciscan broke it's five-day old single-game points record as the Lady Barons won 25-14 behind 25, 14 of which had an assist.
The 25 goals are the most in a single game for the Lady Barons while the 14 assists ties that single-game record and the 39 points breaks the previous record of 35 set last Friday at Chatham.
Leading the offense once again was freshman
Grace Deegan. The Akron, OH native posted seven goals and handed out an assist to push her season point total to 46. Deegan now has 35 goals and 11 assists in just eight games. Sophomore
Maria Hilkert was right behind Deegan with six points behind three goals and three assists while senior
Carly McDonald posted four goals and two assists. Senior
Brittany Bain made 10 saves in the win for the Lady Barons.
The game began as a back and forth affair as the two teams traded goals until the Lady Barons turned a 3-3 tie into a 9-3 lead with six unanswered goals over 11 minutes of game action. The half ended it as it began with the team's exchanging goals and Franciscan getting the last of the half, a free position goal from Deegan to give the Lady Barons a 15-8 lead going into the break.
The second half was kicked off with a goal from senior
Elizabeth Dawyot before Franciscan used a 5-2 run to push its lead to 20-10 and started the first running clock of the game. Deegan pushed the lead to 21-10 with 16:36 to play before the Tomcats scored two straight to cut the deficit back under 10, 21-12 with 13:13 to play. After a 2-1 spurt from the Tomcats kept the visitors within 10, Franciscan scored the game's final three goals to seal the 25-14.
Defensively, Franciscan was led by senior
Elizabeth Jordan with eight ground balls and eight caused turnovers. Dawyot won nine draw controls while freshman
Suzie Rosaschi finished with six.
The Lady Barons get back in action on Thursday when they take a break from PAC action as they host Ohio Wesleyan in a 5:00 pm contest.
