GREENVILLE, Pa. – For the second-straight year, the Franciscan women's soccer team opened the season with win over Thiel. This season, the Lady Barons defeated the Tomcats 3-0 under first-year head coach
Christyn Bobak.
With the win, Bobak earned her first collegiate coaching victory.
Junior
Kaitrin O'Leary wasted little time getting the first goal of the season for the Lady Barons as she scored just 4:05 into the contest thanks to an assist from
Katie Kilian. Sophomore
Claire Dawyot put a shot on goal that was deflected by the Thiel keeper to set up a corner kick for the Lady Barons. Kilian placed a perfect ball for O'Leary who finished it in front of the net to give Franciscan the 1-0 lead.
The Lady Baron defense did not allow a Thiel shot until the 40
th minute, but junior goalie
Marita Ostrich made her first save of the year to keep the shutout intact.
Thiel was able to get a shot off quicker in the second, 8:56 into action, but was once again turned away by Ostrich. The Lady Barons added to their lead as Kilian score her first goal of the year in the 60
th minute for the 2-0 advantage.
O'Leary added her second goal of the game with less than eight minutes to play and put the game effectively out of reach for Franciscan.
Thiel took the final shot of the game but it went wide and Ostrich's first shutut of the season remained.
Ostrich finished the day with six saves in the net for Franciscan while her counterpart, Bethany Bonnar made six saves as well.
Franciscan out-shot the Tomcats 12-8 while the corner kicks were even, 3-3.
The Lady Barons will get back to work on Wednesday, September 4 as they head to Washington, PA to take on W&J at 6pm.
