How It HappenedÂ
Franciscan lost their first conference game to Geneva 1-2. The game started with a lot of back and forth. Geneva controlled the midfield well, and corralled the Franciscan forwards well. Geneva was the first to strike. After a miscue from a Franciscan defender, Geneva's Bodenmiller found herself 1 on 1 with goalkeeper. Franciscan's Dill tried rush the ball, but was a step too slow, and Bodenmiler would sink a shot to the right side. Geneva would enter halftime with the lead 1-0.
It took 30 minutes, but Franciscan would tie the game late in the second half. Gabriella De La Torre had a good line and fired a shot from the top of the penalty box. Her shot was blocked by a defender, and the ball bounced to Tania Davidson. Davidson faked to her strong left side, then went back right, dribbling around two defenders. She sent a rocket with her off foot, and snuck the ball just under the crossbar. Franciscan, used the energy and was on the attack for most of the remaining minutes. Casey Boin had a run that looked like a great opportunity for Franciscan to take the lead. Unfortunately, the goalkeeper beat her to the ball by a fraction of a step. Boin ran into the goalkeeper, and the referee gave her a yellow card for the contact. Geneva went straight downfield and would get awarded a corner kick. Geneva's Berryman took the corner, which was headed right back at her by Angela Postage. From the deep corner, Berryman sent a high ball to the far right, high side of the goal. The ball went just over the goalkeeprs hands, and Geneva secured the lead 2-1. Geneva would hang on to that lead for the remaining one and a half minutes, and win 2-1.
