Deegan Nets Eight Goals In Season Opening Win

How It Happened 
The Franciscan Women's Lacrosse team started its 2021 campaign with a win over Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Bethany 19-11, behind a school record eight goals from Grace Deegan

The Barons would start fast with Grace Deegan scoring the first goal of the game in the first minute. Thirty seconds later Riley O'Brien netted her first goal of the season, putting the Barons ahead 2-0. The Barons continued their fast start, scoring for the third time in the first two minutes when Deegan again found the back of the net off a free position shot. O'Brien would tack on a fourth goal two minutes later, putting Franciscan ahead 4-0. 

After the Bison scored their first goal of the game, Maureen Cain would find an open Deegan for her third goal of the game. A minute later, Cain would again dish an assist to Deegan scoring her fourth goal of the half. With the Barons leading 6-3, Maria Hilkert scored her first goal of the season off a free position shot. Bethany would answer back, scoring three straight goals to close within a single goal. Hilkert would end the Bison's run, netting her second goal of the game. Freshman Joanna Hilkert scored first collegiate goal in the 20 minute on a free position shot, putting Franciscan ahead 9-6. Mary Bohli would close the first half scoring, netting a goal with a minute remaining in the first half to put Franciscan ahead 10-6 going into the half. 

Deegan would score Franciscan's first goal of the second half off an assist from Bohli, keeping the Barons lead at four. After two straight Bethany goals, Deegan would tally her sixth goal of the game on a free position shot. Annie King and Maureen Cain would each score their first goals of the season helping Franciscan build a 14-9 lead. With a man advantage Cain found Elizabeth Dudas to put Franciscan ahead by six. Deegan and Cain would score another goal each, helping Franciscan ahead 17-10. Deegan would score school record tying eight goal with 3:10 remaining in the second half, putting Franciscan ahead 18-11. Cain would tack on one last goal, completing her hat trick and giving Franciscan the 19-11 victory.  

Inside the Numbers 
- Franciscan offense was led by Grace Deegan who scored eight goals, tying a school record for most goals in single game
- Maureen Cain netted three goals and and added three assists, registering six points
- Maria Hilkert and Riley O'Brien each scored two goals
- Joanna Hilkert and Mary Bohli each scored a goal in their first collegiate game
- Elizabeth Dudas and Annie King also scored a goal
- Starting goalie Sam Callahan made 10 saves for the Barons
- Bethany was led by Rikiah Wise who scored six goals 

Who's Next? 
Franciscan will return to action next Saturday at home against Westminster. This will be the Lady Barons home opener and first game on the new turf surface. The Lady Barons are 2-1 all-time against the Titans, but lost in their last matchup in 2019. Franciscan's last win came in 2018, by a score of 14-13. Mary Krolicki scored five goals to lead Franciscan. Current senior Maria Hilkert would score one goal in the victory.
