How It HappenedÂ
The Barons traveled to Beaver Falls, Penn. to face the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes. The game was a flurry of offense that ended in a one goal loss for the Barons. Their first conference loss of the season. With one game left to play they sit less than one win ahead of second place Westminster.Â
7 goals were scored by the end of the game, but 5 of them came in the first 30 minutes. In the first 10 minutes of the game each team mustered only one shot each, but in a blink the game was at 2-1. Geneva scored first 10 minutes in, then Franciscan quickly answered with a goal from freshmen Mary Wieszczek assisted by Juliana Rubino. Two minutes later the Golden Tornadoes took the lead again. Thankfully coaches took a breather and the game returned back to a normal scoring pace with each team trading shots. In the 30th minute Geneva extended their lead to 2, but then Tania Davidson fired right back with a solo goal bringing Franciscan back to within one.Â
Mid-second half Juliana Rubino scored the tying goal. There was 20 minutes left to play and Franciscan looked to be in complete control. For 15 minutes straight the Barons hurled shots and took runs at the goal, but never got one to drop. In the 86th minute Geneva picked up the ball after a Davidson shot and quickly flipped the field. Their counter attack ended in a corner kick for the Golden Tornadoes. The Barons walled up for the corner and after the ball bounced around for 20 seconds it found its way to a Geneva forward who snuck it in past the goalkeeper. The Barons went back to a one point deficit. This time Geneva sank into a defensive formation and allowed 0 shots from the Barons for the remainder of the game.
