How It HappenedÂ
Freshmen Augustine Rubino who has worked his way into the starting lineup from his incredible speed, excellent ball control, and tenacity lead the scoring off with a goal in the 35th minute. Franciscan was on the attack to begin the first half winning the restarts and keeping their formation on the attacking end. The Titans weren't able to get many shifts to the offensive end until later in the half. Tonight's game was closely contested and a battle of the midfielders. Neither team allowed more than 5 shots in the half. The Barons held onto their lead and went into halftime up 1-0.
The second half the Barons were on their back foot. Westminster made two great runs at the goal, but Jax Mautone was in position both times to break up any chance at a shot. The Titans kept the ball in the attacking end, but the Baron defense formed a wall around the box, and the Titans were resorted to a desperate attempt from 30 yds out. The Barons kept clearing the ball repelling the Titans attack. With every push forward and run taken a Baron player would corral the ball and an audible "Away!" was heard.Â
The Barons walked away with what felt like a deja vu match. Their last meeting, in the conference semifinals, Isaac Doyle sunk a goal as the clock expired for halftime. The Barons then held on to their lead to advance to the finals. Last night, Augustine Rubino sunk the late first half goal and the Barons held on to the lead for another 1-0 victory over the Titans. The Barons are 7-2-3 overall and sit at 4th in the PAC.
Coach Ridenour: "[I was] super proud of our effort and energy tonight. Westminster is a very good and experienced team and I like how we came out and won the first half."
Inside the Numbers Â
-Jax Mautone had his 4th shut out of the season and grabbing 6 saves
-Augustine Rubino's game-winning goal is his 4th goal of the season
-Liam Nagle and Joshua Atkinson were each given a Yellow Card
-The Barons were out shot 6-11
Who's Next?Â
Franciscan will return home to face Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon at Trinity Health System Field. The Barons are 4-8-1 all-time against the Presidents, but they are 3-0-1 in their last four matchups. Last year Jonathan Schriner and Sebastian Koehler netted first half goals, while Jax Mautone recorded a shutout in net to give the Barons a 2-0 win. This season, the Presidents hold a winning record and sit near the top of the PAC standings. This would be a big win for the Barons to climb up the standings.
