How It HappenedÂ
The Franciscan Lady Barons started their season at home against Ohio Northern. The last time these teams met was in 2017, and Hiram had a decisive 10-4 win against the Barons. Today the Barons, led by Grace Deegan, put up much more of a fight in their 9-12 loss. Ohio Northern capitalized on a couple fouls inside the 8' mark, and picked up three quick goals between the 12 and 10 minute marks in the first quarter. The Barons got on the board shortly after the Hiram run. Grace Deegan picked up a ground ball and Annie King. Annie made a couple of moves to get passed defenders, and scored the first goal of the season. Northern's Kilgore did an excellent job winning draw controls all day, this allowed them to be on the offensive most of the game. Before the end of the 1st quarter Hiram put up two more goals. The Barons were down 5-1 with three minutes remaining in the quarter. They needed a leader to pick them up and make a play. Grace Deegan got the ball in her hands and took it through the entire Hiram defense to score a goal. At the end of the 1st quarter the score was 5-2 Hiram.
In the 2nd quarter Grace Deegan, Theresa Lyle, and Riley O'Brien each picked up a goal. Northern's duo of Kilgore and Graham controlled the ball well, and Hiram added three more goals. At the end of the first half the score was 8-5.
The second half saw a similar scoring pace. In the 3rd quarter Ohio Northern added three more goals, and the Barons' Kathryn Brehm scored her first goal of the season. The 4th quarter was all Barons. Kathryn Brehm, Annie King, and Grace Deegan each added another goal for the day. The Barons were mounting a comeback, but time was on Hiram's side. Ohio Northern held the ball for the full shot clock every chance they could, and stalled the Baron comeback. The final score was 12-9, and the Barons fell 0-2 all-time versus Hiram.Â
