How It HappenedÂ
The Franciscan Lady Barons lost at home, but still had reason to celebrate. Entering today's contest Grace Deegan needed 2 goals to surpass Tracy McClelland in career goals scored. The Barons had an early 3-0 deficit in the 1st quarter. Elizabeth Dudas scored her 1st goal of the season midway through the 1st quarter, bringing the score to 3-1. The Pioneers were given a yellow card, and with the man up opportunity, Grace Deegan ripped a free position shot and scored her 1st goal of the game. Everyone was excited for Grace to get another quick goal and become 3rd all-time in scoring, but the Pioneers were keyed in on Grace and face guarded her throughout the entire attack zone. After the exciting small Baron run, the Pioneers scored twice more to bring the score to 5-2 at the end of the 1st quarter.
The lone Baron scorer in the 2nd quarter was from Riley O'Brien, her second on the season. The Pioneers had a flurry of goals in this quarter, and extended their lead to 10-3 by halftime.Â
Christina Haug and Katheryn Brehm each scored a goal in the 3rd quarter. However, the Pioneers answered each of the Barons goals, and maintained their seven point lead.
In the 4th quarter we finally saw the anticipated 2nd goal from Grace Deegan. Much like her first goal of the day, she received a free position attempt and charged the goalie. Grace was able to rip a shot off before a defender could contest her. Joanna Hilkert added her 1st goal of the season, bringing the deficit to 5. These two quick goals brought some momentum for the Barons. Unfortunately, the Pioneers stayed disciplined and held the Barons off for the rest of the 4th quarter, in addition to adding three late goals of their own.Â
