Women's Tennis Hangs on to Close One to Start 2-0 for the Week

Franciscan 9, Saint Francis (Ind.) 0

Steubenville, Ohio - The Franciscan Women's Tennis

Singles
#1 Maria Herrera, #2 Olivia Colby, #3 Zoey Stapleton, #4 Caroline Picard, #5 Haley Davinsizer, #6 Laina Anderson
Franciscan Tennis begins their Spring Break trip to Florida with a match against the University of St. Francis (Ind). It has been over four months since the Lady Barons won the conference championship. However, they seem as sharp today as they were last fall. The match started with singles play, and St.Francis forfeited the #5 and #6 hitters, earning wins for Haley Davinsizer and Laina Anderson. PAC player of the year Maria Herrera was the first singles match to finish. Maria swept her opponent in two straight sets. PAC rookie of the year Olivia Colby finished next, winning her match in two sets and only dropping 4 games total. Caroline Picard finished third winning her match in two sets and only dropping 2 games. Zoey Stapleton finished fourth winning her match in two sets.
Doubles
    #1 Maria Herrera/Olivia Colby, #2 Haley Davinsizer/Zoey Stapleton, #3 Caroline Picard/Laina Anderson
St. Francis only brought 4 players, and forfeited the #3 doubles match. The 1st team All-Conference doubles pair of Maria Herrera and Olivia Colby won their match without dropping a point. The last match of play was the #2 doubles of Zoey Stapleton and Haley Davinsizer. The Barons #2 pairing finished the Lady Barons sweep losing only 3 points.

Franciscan 5, Hamline 4

The Franciscan Women's Tennis finished their PAC conference play and regular season at home against Westminster. Franciscan came into the night having already clinched a minimum #2 seed for the PAC championship tournament. A win would guarantee the #1 seed and a 1st round bye. A loss would guarantee the #2 seed, and still get a 1st round bye.

Doubles
Franciscan normally dominates doubles play, but today it wasn't their strength. The Barons went 1-2 in doubles, with their sole point coming from a forfeit from Hamline. The doubles pairings today looked a little bit different then normal. The #2 doubles were Laina Anderson and Makena Wisniewski. The #1 doubles Zoey Stapleton and Caroline Picard. If Hamline had a #3 doubles team, they would have faced Isabella Matt and Haley Davinsizer.
Singles
Singles play started off with a double forefeit of the #5 and #6 hitters. First to finish a match was #1 Maria Herrera. She swept her opponent in two straight sets. #4 Makena Wiskniewski lost her match in two sets. #3 Laina Anderson struggled in her first set only wining one game. She then turned it around in the second set, and handily won only dropping three games. The 3rd tie break set was much closer, and Anderson was able to edge it out 10-7, scoring another team point for the Barons. This gave the Barons their 5th point and clinched the team victory. The last match remaining was freshmen Olivia Colby playing the #2 spot. Colby's first two sets were drastic ups and downs and her opponent managed to force a 3rd set. In the 3rd set, Colby was just shy of winning and claiming the match victory.

Who's Next?
The Lady Barons get back into action on Wednesday with a pair of tough matchups. They will square off against Springfield and Transylvania. This will be their first matchup against both of these teams in school history. Springfield is just getting their season underway, and they have won a couple matches in a row with out a loss. Transylvania won their conference last fall with numerous impressive wins. It will be a good test for the Lady Barons against a fellow NCAA Tournament-qualifying team.
