How It Happened
Franciscan goes to 2-0 in the PAC after beating St. Vincent 22-9. Non-conference play has sharpened Franciscan players. On paper it seemed that today was going to be a close contest. Initially, the game was tight, but late in the 1st half Franciscan began to pull away. Joanna Hilkert, who was coming off a career high 5 goal game against Westminster, put up another career night scoring another 5 goals. Her first goal came in the opening seconds. Riley O'Brien swooped in and won the draw control, then wasted no time racing up the field. O'Brien made a cut in front of the net with the ball, but couldn't find a shot. She dumped it off to Grace Deegan. Deegan made a cut toward the net, but was doubled and forced wide. Joanna Hilkert recognized the opening, and came from behind the net. Deegan found her and Hilkert easily shot the ball into an open net. The next faceoff, Riley O'Brien won another draw control and found Grace Deegan in left mid field. Deegan dodged low between 2 defenders who collided with each other trying to defend Deegan. She raced straight for the net and added another goal to their lead. The Barons ended 1st quarter scoring on a man up opportunity. Grace Deegan, with free position, went 1 on 1 with the goalie and brought the Franciscan lead to 8-3.
The Barons only allowed 1 goal in the 2nd quarter while adding 5 goals of their own. Theresa Lyle picked up a pair of goals in the second quarter. Going into halftime, the score was 13-4 and Franciscan was firmly in control. Riley O'Brien, on her way to a career high 5 goal game, picked up the hat-trick early in the 3rd quarter. The Barons had a dominating performance across the board, winning in draw controls, ground balls, free positions, and shots. Another well executed performance from a group of hard working athletes.
