How It HappenedÂ
The Barons finished the regular season 5-3 in the PAC after defeating the Bethany Bison on the road. With how tight the standings are, tonight's game was a must win for the Barons. A win clinched a playoff berth, but a loss put their destiny in someone else's hands. Given the importance, the 1st quarter did not look good for the Barons. The Bison scored 3 unanswered goals to go up 3-0. Theresa Lyle sank one in shortly after Joanna Hilkert's shot bounced off the Bison goalie. This was the only goal for the Barons in the 1st quarter, so the score was 3-1 at the end of the first.Â
The women shook off the rocky first quarter and got into a rhythm. Annie King started 2nd quarter scoring off with a free position goal one minute into the quarter. Grace Deegan then tied the game at 3 with a free position shot. Grace Deegan then took the lead for the Barons off an Annie King assist. Riley O'Brien and Joanna Hilkert each added a goal to regain the lead at 6-5. Hilkert's goal turned out to be the winning goal, the Barons never ceded the lead again. Grace Deegan finished scoring for the half to put the Barons up 7-5.
In the 3rd, Riley O'Brien scored her second goal, Deegan added a pair of goals, and Carolyn Cooke scored her 5th goal of the season to bring the Barons lead to 11-5.Â
Joanna Hilkert and Riley O'Brien each completed their hat-tricks in the 4th quarter. Mary Bohli scored her 7th goal on the year. Once the Barons gained the confidence in the second quarter, they never turned back. When the clock ran out, the Barons won 17-7.Â
