How It HappenedÂ
The Franciscan Women's Lacrosse team made their third straight trip to the PAC Tournament on Wednesday. The Barons lost to Grove City in a thrilling overtime contest during the regular season. The Barons had a free position goal as time expired that was called off. In overtime, the Wolverines caused a turnover and quickly ran down field to score and end the game. Annie King scored 6 goals that game. For a complete game recap follow this link. The Barons looked to travel back for the rematch and advance to the PAC championship game.Â
In the first quarter, turnovers on the offensive end plagued the Barons. With a man up opportunity, the Barons had an excellent chance to bring the game to within one. A high pass, out of the reach of Annie King, sailed over to the blue line. The Wolverines were able to pick up the ground ball and transition onto the offensive end. Rose kane was staring at a 3-2 disadvantage as the Wolverines sprinted up the field. After a quick pass across the front of the goal, Grove City fired a quick shot to an open gap in the net. Kane made a quick turn and got her leg on the ball to prevent the goal. Unfortunately her team did not come up with the rebound and the Wolverines went up 3-0.Â
After halftime, the Barons drew a penalty with a man up opportunity. The Grove City defense has packed the in tight preventing any screening plays for the Barons. Riley O'Brien had a free position shot, but the bounced shot went high and over the goal. When your down in a playoff game you need big plays to overcome a disadvantage. After Grace Deegan had her shot saved and Grove City was quickly transitioning downfield, Elizabeth Dudas came screaming across midfield to pick off a pass and cause a turnover. This gave the Barons another much needed offensive possession. The second quarter was an improvement for the Barons. They spent more time on the attack, and limited Grove City's looks on the defensive end. They effectively slowed down the Grove City attack and limited them to 2 goals in the quarter. With the score 5-0 at halftime, the ladies needed to find it in them to make the next steps of improvement to start scoring some goals and bringing this lead down.Â
In the 4th quarter the Barons gained some momentum and mounted a comeback. Ashley Morrisey picked off a pass at the blue line allowing another offensive possession. Riley O'Brien ran a circle around 3 defenders to score Franciscan's 3rd? goal. Riley O'Brien answered again with a goal off a free position shot. O'Brien brought the Barons to within 4.
