How It HappenedÂ
Today the Barons finished their non-conference play at home against the Oberlin Yeowomen. The Barons looked to have complete control of the game holding possession of the ball on the attacking end. Oberlin was forced to sink in on the defensive end. However, a quick counter strike with open field allowed an early goal for Oberlin. The Barons bounced back and kept up the attack for 30 more minutes, but for the second time an Oberlin forward got loose and the Yeowomen went up 2-0. To end the half the Barons had a predominantly young lineup with 7 freshmen, 1 transfer, and only 3 returners. This fresh lineup gave some much needed rest for the Baron starters. The young lineup was predominantly in the defensive end, but allowed 0 SOG. After spending halftime in the newly opened locker rooms to cool off, the Baron starters came out with over 25 minutes of rest and looked prime for a comeback. From the starting kickoff of the second half the Barons went back on the attack. 10 minutes in, Bella Rubino caught a loose ball at the top of the box. She put a high ball to the top right of the goal and brought the Barons to within one. With time running out and down two goals, Juliana Rubino beat two defenders then beat the goalkeeper to bring the Barons back to within one. The ball control was there all game and the effort from the midfielders kept the Barons in the game, but soccer is a game of small margins. In the end, the two lucky goal sin the first half were too much of a hole to get out of and the Barons lost by one.Â
What is exciting is to see how deep the Barons can play which will bring fresh legs and continued dominance in ball possession.Â
