How It HappenedÂ
The Barons hosted the Grove City Wolverines for their first conference home game. Going into tonight's contest, the Women's Soccer program has never defeated the Wolverines, and never come within 2 goals.
The bigger they are, the harder they...get their first loss to the Barons.
However, this lopsided victory didn't start with that feeling. Ball possession was hotly contested and remained mostly in the midfield. The first SOG for either team can 9 minutes in with the Wolverines striking first going up 1-0. The Barons pressure and veteran play in the midfield began to wear on the Wolverines. Possession slowly shifted to staying on the Baron attacking end. The shooters started racking up shots and the team was playing with confidence that one would fall.
Transfer Claire Salyer struck first on a header off a cross from Angela Postage. Salyer grabbed her goal just seconds after entering the game. The go-ahead-goal came off Juliana Rubino's foot. Angela Postage got her second assist by putting a deep ball in front of the net. Anni Winnogradoff headed the ball off the goalkeeper's hands, and Juliana was there to put it away grabbing her first goal of the day. The Barons intercepted an errant pass of the restart and broke away on a 2 on 2. Claire Salyer found Tania Davidson racing past her defender down the left side. Tania quickly gathered Claire's pass and beat the goalkeeper before she could recover. The Barons were winning 3-1 with 20 minutes remaining in the half. Grove City calmed down, and the rest of the half the ball bounced back and forth in the midfield.
Our fans saw Grove City's bright red jerseys, Juliana Rubino saw blood in the water. The second half was the Rubino show. Juliana and her sister Bella played a two man game picking apart the Wolverine defenders. The two hooked up for an early second half goal to give Juliana her 2nd goal of the game and the Barons a 4-1 lead. Juliana added 2 more goals for a total of 4 on the day. The 3rd goal was off another Angela Postage assist, and the last was a 1 on 4 effort to close out the day's scoring.
The Barons are now undefeated in PAC play and look poised to make the playoffs this year.
Inside the Numbers Â
-Juliana Rubino's 4 goal effort breaks the school record as she becomes the only Baron with a 4 goal performance
-Additionally, Juliana's 8 points is 2nd all-time for points in a game.
-Angela Postage was leading the PAC with 7 season assists, her 3 assists today bring her season total to 10 and likely retaining her position atop the conference.
-Rebekka Dill grabbed 8 savesÂ
Who's Next?Â
Franciscan will continue PAC play on Tuesday night when Thiel comes to Steubenville. The Barons are 9-1 all-time against the Tomcats, including wins in their last four matchups. Over those four games, Franciscan has outscored Thiel by a score of 16-1, but last year's matchup was a close one, as Franciscan won by a score of 1-0. Tania Davidson scored the lone goal in the first half, and the defense did a wonderful job by only allowing two shots on goal.Â
