How It Happened
Franciscan made its home opener a big one against the #15 nationally ranked Carnegie Mellon Tartans. Franciscan played 22 deep in this contest to slow down the Tartan attack. Rebekka Dill faced 28 shots with 21 SOG.
After a quick 2-0 deficit, the Barons found their stride gaining possession of the ball and keeping it in the attacking end. Sophomore Tania Davidson beat her defender on a runner and put a big leg from the right side of the box up and over the goalkeeper to the top left corner of the net. This brought the score to 2-1, and the Barons gained some momentum. The Barons let one more goal slip before the half, but 3-1 was still anyone's game and the Barons were playing excellent ball before the break. In the second half the Barons seemed to have lost their step. The Tartans starting beating them to balls and despite the strong efforts from the midfielder's, they weren't able to apply much pressure on the opposing goalie. Carnegie Mellon edged in 3 more goals in the second half and finished the game with a 6-1 lead.
