How It HappenedÂ
The Franciscan Men's Lacrosse team have extended their historic start to 4-0 on the road against Mount St. Joseph University. After the game, Coach Pete stated "the men want to offer their game up for Cassie Martinez." Prior to the game, they were devastated with the shocking news that their friend and peer had suddenly passed away. Their thoughts and prayers, as well as ours, go out to her family and loved ones as they navigate these difficult times.Â
The Barons had slow starts to their prior games. Today they came out with a fury. Firing a volley of shots at MSJ's Jackson. As the common phrase goes, "the ninth one is the charm." Well normally the third one, but today MSJ held on for 9 shots before finally ceding the opening goal to Nicholas Sando giving the Barons the 1-0 lead. The Barons took this lead and ran. They never allowed MSJ to take the lead or bring the game back to break. Nathaniel Carter and Dominic Scordino added goals to close the 1st quarter scoring out. MSJ's McGrone snuck one goal in before the end of the quarter to bring the score to 3-1.
In the second quarter MSJ's defense tightened up. Opportunities were not so highly available like the first quarter. Nicholas Sando opened the quarter with his second goal of the game. The Barons didn't tally another score until late in the quarter when Gavin Cook scored on a man-up advantage. The Barons closed the half leading 5-3.
In the quarter break MSJ found a way to stifle the Baron offense, but during the halftime break the Barons found a way to break the game wide open. The third quarter was a flurry of scoring for the men. They opened with 3 unanswered goals by Nathaniel Carter, Richard Vale II, and Dominic Scordino. Scordino, Michael Francis, and Alex Ahmann added 3 more goals before the end of the quarter to bring the lead to 11-6.
In the fourth quarter Nicholas Sando and Gavin Cook completed their hat tricks for the contest finishing the game out strong.
