How It Happened
Franciscan took on Mount Saint Vincent in a single nine-inning game on Tuesday afternoon in Fort Pierce, Florida. After scoring just one run in two games on Sunday, the bats showed up to put up 11 runs in this one. Unfortunately that would not be enough, as the Dolphins would edge out the Barons by one run.
The Dolphins put up a pair of runs in the opening inning, but the Barons would be able to tie it up with a run in each of the first two innings. Franciscan would go on to take a lead with a three-run third inning.
Jacob Watson singled in
Wade Stoehr, and then
Peter Falconite singled in Watson.
Samuel Tyler would then draw a bases loaded walk to bring home Ferroni to take the 5-2 lead. That lead would be gone, as the Dolphins scored seven unanswered runs combined in the fifth through seventh innings to take a 9-5 edge.
The Barons would tack one on in the seventh before the Dolphins score a pair in the eighth to set the score at 11-6. Stoehr and Watson kept the offense going in the eight by driving in a couple runs to cut it to a three run game, as we entered the ninth inning. The Dolphins drove in one run on an RBI triple in the top half of the inning. Then in the bottom half, the Barons would load the bases up with the first three batters getting on board.
Jack Froman then stepped up huge with a two-run single to set the score at 12-10. Froman later scored on an error to pull within one run with just one out. That would be it for the Barons, as a double play would end the threat and hand the Barons the loss.
At the Plate
- Stoehr, Watson, and Froman each had two RBIs.
- Stoehr and Gambrel each had a double.
- Stoehr and Watson each had three hits.
On the Mound
- It was more of a bullpen day for the Barons with it taking five pitchers to go the distance.
-
Dominic Brandi was the most effective, as he went 3.1 innings with just one earned run and four strikeouts.
Up Next
Franciscan will have a couple of days off before they take on Earlham in a doubleheader on Thursday. The Quakers won their conference last year to earn a birth in the NCAA Tournament, and they are off to a good start this season through non-conference play.
